Description & Project Overview

The General Directorate of Policy and Strategy (GDPS) of the Ministry of Environment (MoE), through UNDP Cambodia, has received funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to implement a five-year project entitled “Building Resilient Livelihoods through Nature-Based Solutions in the Tonle Sap Basin and Siem Reap/Phnom Kulen Landscape.” The project targets 6 districts in Siem Reap Province: Sourt Nikom, Svay Leu, Banteay Srei, Run Ta Ek Techo Sen City, Angkor Thom, and Varin. The project activities can be summarized as follows: The Tonle Sap Basin (TSB), a vital economic and cultural region of Cambodia, is experiencing significant climate change impacts, including rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, longer and drier dry seasons, wetter wet seasons, and more frequent droughts and floods. These climate-related hazards, combined with accelerating forest degradation and unsustainable land management practices such as agricultural expansion and inadequate water conservation, disrupt hydrological cycles, threaten water resources and agricultural productivity, and undermine natural resource-based livelihoods and tourism, a key economic sector. Consequently, communities are increasingly adopting maladaptive practices, such as forest clearing for agricultural expansion, which further contributes to environmental degradation. To address these challenges, the Ministry of Environment (MoE), in collaboration with UNDP and with financial support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), will implement the project entitled “Building Resilient Livelihoods through Nature-Based Solutions in the Tonle Sap Basin and Siem Reap/Phnom Kulen Landscape.” The project will be implemented over five years, from 2026 to 2031 , and aims to enhance communities' resilience to fluvial floods and droughts in the Tonle Sap Basin, contributing to Cambodia’s green growth objectives.
