project description:
the physics building was constructed in 1962 and much of the electrical system, original to the building, is beyond its useful life. these systems are also not compliant with current building codes, contain hazardous materials and need complete upgrades. the existing protective devices may not operate as specified, increasing the potential for arc-flash hazards and system damaging electrical faults. repairs are cost prohibitive and may lead to extended unplanned outages in this mission critical facility.
the contractor shall provide all labor, supervision, materials (except as noted below), equipment, and services necessary for complete removal and upgrading of the existing building 510 electrical substation equipment that feeds the newly replaced electrical distribution switchgear. this project includes the removal of two medium voltage substation transformers, one medium voltage oil switch and medium voltage distribution cabling. the project also includes the installation of a new exterior substation with two new medium voltage transformers, one pad mounted medium voltage switchgear and medium voltage feeders in a new concrete encased duct bank. the new substation will be constructed in the north-loading dock parking lot, complete with new transformer and switchgear pads, grounding and crushed stone. long lead electrical equipment procurements are planned early in the project and construction of the substation infrastructure can be completed in parallel. once the cutovers are completed the old transformers and oil switch will be removed from the equipment vault in the basement of building 510. the contractor shall not procure the switchgear or transformers under this contract. installation will be executed in a phased approach in order to minimize electric service disruptions to the building and will provide provisions for future redundant circuit configuration.
