Description & Project Overview
Last summer showed us that we are still insufficiently prepared for the extreme heat, which we expect will increase as a result of the changing climate. One of the measures we can take and which only a few have taken so far are cooling areas. A cool place should be a place where people can go temporarily to recover from the heat, a concept that has existed in our southern neighboring countries for much longer. Although several cities in Flanders have already started this on their own initiative, there is a lack of a scientifically based policy framework with which local authorities can get started. The aim of this research assignment is to formulate a policy framework for mapping possible cooling areas, determining quality requirements and answering some organizational issues.
