Contract Description
High-performance computers 2027 GPU-System
The Max Planck Society (MPG) operates the Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF) in Garching near Munich, which provides high-performance computing capacity and mass storage systems for various MPG institutes. The current MPG high-performance computing complex Raven, which was installed by Lenovo in 2020 (with an aggregated peak computing power of approx. 25 PFlop/s), is now to be replaced for demanding, simulation-based scientific projects, e.g. from astrophysics, life sciences, materials research and plasma physics. The new high-performance computer system to be procured (Lot 1 see above, hereinafter referred to as the “HPC system”) is intended to significantly increase the computing power of the predecessor Raven system, while also increasing energy efficiency. The computing performance of the offered system is measured using the MPG Benchmark Suite 2026, which consists of parallel HPC simulation codes with a focus on double-precision floating point arithmetic (FP64). As part of the process, another high-performance computer system is to be procured, which is specifically designed for a wide variety of AI applications from all scientific sections of the MPG (HERE: Lot-2, hereinafter referred to as the GPU system) and will be awarded and operated independently of the above-mentioned HPC system. The subject of the award includes the procurement, installation and maintenance of the two new systems. The new computer systems are operated by MPCDF, Giessenbachstrasse 2 in D-85748 Garching near Munich. With this process, the client looks for solutions that can meet their requirements. Suggested solutions will be discussed and optimized in dialogue. After completion of the dialogue phase (separately for each lot), the client requests all remaining bidders to prepare and submit a final offer, on the basis of which the contract will be awarded. Following the participation competition, a dialogue will be held with the selected (suitable) companies to determine and specify the requirements. The aim is to arrive at a proposed solution by developing solution concepts. This proposed solution then becomes the basis for the creation of the final list of services or a technical concept and finally a catalog of criteria. Further details can be found in the tender documents, in particular the service description (appendix category A) and the contract (appendix category B).
