Description & Project Overview
Zurich Airport's infrastructure is undergoing a gradual renewal process. In the last 15 years, various parts of the central airport infrastructure have been extensively renovated and expanded: Dock B was completely rebuilt, Terminal 2 was completely renovated and expanded, and the new security control building with centralized access to the Airside Center was built between Terminals 1 and 2. The central baggage sorting system north of Terminal 1 is currently being expanded and the airport-wide baggage sorting system is being replaced and renewed. In the next step, the aging parts of the central airport infrastructure must be replaced: Dock A, together with the tower, was put into operation in 1985 and its structure has remained largely unchanged to this day. In terms of functionality, sustainability and quality, Dock A can no longer meet today's requirements. Based on a comprehensive analysis, it was decided to replace the existing Dock A with a new building north of the current building. The replacement building for Dock A, the new tower and the extensively renovated apron to Dock A with all further adjustments, expansions and conversions of the central airport infrastructure are the most important structural measures of the next 15 to 20 years. During phased implementation, it must be ensured that operations can continue as normal and that future functional requirements can be met with the newly constructed buildings. The PWA “Perimeter exposure root A” project includes the implementation of adjustments to existing media and systems. These are located in and outside the demolition perimeter of Root Dock A. The work is to be carried out for the dismantling stage and for the further phases of the new replacement Dock A in the period from 2026-2033. Essential parts of the building technology for supplying the control tower, dock root A, dock A, airside center and the passport control hall are located in the demolition perimeter of dock root A.
